German chemical firm Evonik started operations at a second methionine plant on Jurong Island, Singapore, on June 18, 2019. The investment exceeds €500 million and doubles the company's Singapore capacity from 150,000 to 300,000 tonnes per year.
The site will represent over 40% of Evonik's 730,000 tonnes of global annual methionine output.
Methionine is a key amino acid additive in poultry and swine feed, so added Asian capacity signals rising feed demand tied to regional meat consumption. The expansion adds supply in the region, which could ease methionine prices over time.
