Barge traffic resumed on the Mississippi after months of flood disruption, and all locks managed by the Rock Island District of the Army Corps of Engineers were reopened. Only a handful of barges had moved through Rock Island since March, against about one per day normally.
Army Corps officials said the locks had been closed longer this year than in any other year on record.
Reopened locks ease the bottleneck for fertilizer and grain barges, though the backlog means freight demand and rates may stay firm through the summer.
