The Panama Canal published a proposal on June 14, 2019 to modify its tolls structure across vessel segments, including a matching of Neopanamax iron ore and grain tolls and a tariff increase for ballast dry bulkers. A 30-day consultation runs until July 15, with changes proposed for January 1, 2020.
Higher tolls for grain-carrying dry bulkers in ballast could marginally raise the cost of US Gulf and Pacific grain exports via Panama, slightly shifting freight economics for feed grains.
