Evonik and DSM's 50:50 joint venture Veramaris has started production at a $200 million algal oil plant in Blair, Nebraska. The fermentation process yields EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids for salmon feed without using wild-caught fish oil.
The initial output can supply about 15 percent of global salmon-farming demand for these fatty acids.
A new non-fish source of EPA and DHA could reduce salmon feed's reliance on fish oil and, to a lesser degree, fishmeal. That is a mild bearish influence on fishmeal demand over time.
