A Reserve Bank of India update found that onshore rupee rates, especially during volatile periods, are guided by offshore non-deliverable forward (NDF) market prices. The study found a significant two-way link between NDF and onshore prices for 2010 to 2018.
Growing offshore rupee activity means the rupee may be more exposed to overseas shocks, which adds volatility to import costs. This is a central bank analysis with no direct commodity price signal.
