Flooding on the Mississippi River has disrupted barge traffic for months, with St. Louis at flood stage for 108 consecutive days and multiple lock closures. Category 1 Hurricane Barry made landfall in Louisiana on July 13 and pushed the Lower Mississippi higher again.
The river at Vicksburg was expected to stay above flood stage until late July, and Baton Rouge may remain in flood stage into August.
Prolonged river closures and high water stall barge movements, which raises freight costs and can delay grain loadings from the Midwest to the Gulf. This supports higher barge freight rates and wider Gulf basis.
