Oklahoma State University researchers reported a feedlot trial in which 64 crossbred steers were fed diets with 15% whole cottonseed and 7% gin trash in place of wet corn gluten feed. Cotton-fed steers tended to be heavier at final weight, at p=0.09.
The study was presented at the American Society of Animal Science annual meeting, and the authors said greater cotton production is increasing the supply of byproducts.
Evidence that cotton byproducts can work in feedlot rations could widen their use and raise demand for cottonseed as cattle feed. The research is preliminary and the price effect is small.
