A new cottonseed meal pellet made by Oilseeds Australia from a by-product of cottonseed oil extraction is in demand among livestock producers in drought-hit Queensland and NSW. The product, which blends cottonseed meal with barley, wheat or almond husks, has about 16% crude protein and has been sold for roughly 12 months.
Current output is about 30,000 tonnes a year, with plans to expand.
Strong drought-driven demand for alternative pellets tightens local feed supply and supports cottonseed meal use. The effect on commodity prices is limited because the volumes are small and regional.
