EU member states agreed on July 18 to provide €32.1 million in exceptional support to Italian egg and poultry meat producers, matched by Italian government funds for a total of €64.2 million. The aid compensates losses from 45 avian influenza outbreaks confirmed between October 2017 and June 2018 in ducks, turkeys, guinea fowl and chickens.
The payment is compensation for past losses and does not change current supply much, so price impact for feed buyers is minimal. It mainly signals that Italian poultry output was disrupted in 2017-18.
