The Bank of Thailand unexpectedly cut its policy rate by 25 basis points to 1.50%, with five of seven committee members voting for the move. A bank analyst said the cut would ease baht appreciation pressure but would not remove the currency's strength, and raised the end-2019 USD/THB forecast to 31.5 from 31.0.
A lower Thai policy rate weakens the baht's yield appeal and tends to push USD/THB higher. This reduces the local-currency cost of dollar-priced imports for Thai buyers and feed-related purchases.
