The Army Corps of Engineers has scheduled a full closure of the Starved Rock and Marseilles locks on the Illinois Waterway from September 21 to October 5, 2019. Six of the eight Illinois Waterway locks are slated for major repairs, with closures of 90 to 120 days expected in 2020 and 2023.
Shippers are being urged to reroute commodities or move cargo outside the closure windows.
Illinois River closures will push grain volumes onto rail, trucks or the Mississippi, raising barge and logistics costs and potentially widening Illinois basis for corn and soybeans.
