The Army Corps of Engineers' Rock Island District warned it would begin pulling dredges from the Mississippi River on August 17 because emergency dredging funds had not arrived. The district is spending about five times its normal dredging budget to clear flood-related shoaling.
A river industry task force has asked eight senators to direct the Corps to release the $100 million in disaster relief funds.
If dredging stops, shoaling could force further draft restrictions and closures on the upper Mississippi, slowing grain barge movements and lifting barge freight costs for feed buyers.
