Mosaic is idling its Louisiana phosphates operations in St. James Parish to cut production by about 500,000 tons this year. The company said excess imports have pushed down prices and that it will begin $250 million in stock buybacks.
Mosaic expects a more balanced global market by 2020.
The production cut should reduce high US phosphate inventories and firm DAP prices as supply tightens. The buyback does not change the physical fertilizer balance.
After 193 past bullish trade events, DAP moved a median +0.4% over 5 sessions (54% higher; middle half -0.3% to +1.8%), and +1.9% over 20.
