Belarus, one of the largest potash exporters, may cut potash output by almost a third within 3-4 months amid weaker global demand, according to Reuters. Belaruskali's chief executive said global demand is down this year because of large stockpiles and that some analysts expect prices to decline.
Belarus Potash Company also plans to begin talks with India on a new supply contract this month, when the prior year's contract was set at $290/t.
A planned output cut of this size would tighten supply, but the weak demand and large inventories cited by the producer point to softer potash prices in the near term. Buyers should watch the India and China contract talks for the price benchmark.
