Rabobank's report How to Succeed in Aqua Feed says the aquafeed industry is slowing after years of growth and faces overcapacity in most key markets. It notes that slower salmon production in Norway and Chile and salmon farmers milling their own feed are limiting opportunities.
The report estimates that self-sufficiency by Mowi and Bakkafrost reduces the European aquafeed market by about 20%.
Slower aquafeed demand and in-house milling reduce the volume of fishmeal and fish oil buyers need, which is bearish for fishmeal. Overcapacity may also keep feed prices under pressure.
