CN said it would halt all intermodal traffic from the US into Canada, starting with the Port of New York and New Jersey and several inland points. The move is a precaution ahead of a possible strike that could shut both CN and CPKC.
CN had already seen intermodal volume fall 17% between May and July.
Halting intermodal imports reduces containerized flows and pushes shippers toward alternative ports and trucks. The disruption raises costs and adds uncertainty for importers and exporters.
