Canada's federal government told the WTO in a September 9 filing that China has repeatedly declined to provide adequate scientific evidence for its ban on Canadian canola imports. The ban has cost the Canadian canola industry about 500 million dollars over six months.
The filing comes amid a diplomatic dispute that started with the arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou in December 2018.
The continued Chinese ban keeps Canadian canola seed out of its largest export market, which pressures domestic prices and meal supply. The dispute is a political rather than a supply-driven factor, so its timing is uncertain.
