Víctor Suárez Carrera, undersecretary for food self-sufficiency at Mexico's agriculture ministry, urged approval of a law protecting native corn before the USMCA takes effect. A draft law approved by the Senate would bar patents on corn and prohibit only genetically modified corn.
The National Agriculture Council opposes the proposal.
The law targets GM and patented corn rather than imports of hybrid corn, so the direct effect on corn trade flows is modest. Its passage would still add uncertainty over future GM corn access in Mexico.
After 439 past neutral policy events, Corn moved a median +0.1% over 5 sessions (51% higher; middle half -1.3% to +1.2%), and +1.1% over 20.
