Karen Hansen-Kuhn of IATP writes that Adelita San Vicente Tello, a leader of the Mexican Sin Maíz No Hay País campaign, is moving into the López Obrador administration. More than 200 Mexican scientists and civil society leaders had asked the president for a biosafety decree that would ban permits for GMO corn planting and impose a moratorium on U.S. corn imports.
The proposals would be phased in.
If Mexico restricts GMO corn and imposes a moratorium on U.S. corn imports, it could cut demand for U.S. yellow corn, a key export market. The proposal is advocacy rather than enacted policy, so the price effect is limited for now.
After 310 past bearish policy events, CORN moved a median +0.3% over 5 sessions (54% higher; middle half -1.4% to +1.9%), and +0.6% over 20.
Moves of each commodity's benchmark from the last close before the event. Historical reads pool past events of the same kind; they describe what happened, not what will. Not investment advice.
