Adisseo, a subsidiary of China National Bluestar, began building a new liquid methionine plant in Nanjing on March 23, adding 180,000 tons of annual capacity to its existing 170,000-ton plant in China. The roughly $490 million investment is expected to start operating in 2021.
Adisseo is the world's second-largest methionine producer after Evonik.
The added Chinese methionine capacity is a medium-term bearish signal for methionine prices, although the market is currently tight and the plant will not add supply until 2021. Feed buyers should expect more domestic supply to ease pressure on Chinese methionine costs over time.
