Federal and state officials are preparing for a possible return of avian influenza this fall after no new US cases since June 17. Earlier H5N2 outbreaks led to 48 million birds being killed, two thirds of them in Iowa, and several state fairs have banned poultry shows.
Expectations of renewed outbreaks raise the risk of future poultry supply losses and price spikes, but no current losses are reported. The market impact at present is minimal.
