The Thunder Bay Port Authority is taking a wait-and-see approach after CN workers struck in the city and across Canada. Only about 20 per cent of grain shipments to Thunder Bay move on CN, so the local impact is expected to be limited.
The port CEO said prolonged disruption would have a larger impact, especially on CN-only ports such as Prince Rupert and Halifax.
Thunder Bay is less exposed than CN-only ports, so the direct effect on grain flows is modest. Longer disruption would still delay shipments and could raise freight costs for Canadian exports.
