Indian rice exporters must now obtain a Certificate of Inspection from an export inspection agency to ship basmati and non-basmati rice to EU countries. The requirement follows a tightened EU maximum residue limit for the fungicide tricyclazole in basmati.
India exports about 300,000 tonnes of basmati to the EU each year.
The added certification step can slow shipments and raise costs for Indian rice sold into the EU, which weighs on export demand and prices for Indian rice. The effect is most concentrated in the basmati segment.
