The Suez Canal Authority has extended fee discounts for container ships and bulk carriers through June 2020. Bulk vessels on US Gulf, South America and Caribbean routes receive 20-75% reductions, and container ships from the US East Coast to South and Southeast Asia receive 45-65%.
Lower canal fees reduce shipping costs on key grain and oilseed trade lanes, modestly easing ocean freight pressure. The discounts are aimed at attracting traffic and may shift routing economics.
