China's agriculture ministry said U.S.-China trade talks have made positive progress, lifting global soybean prices, though mixed signals from both sides have left the market directionless. CBOT most-active soybeans averaged $341 a ton in October, up about 7% from September, and USDA reported October soybean export prices rose $22 to $345 a ton.
Prices are being held up by expectations of a phase-one purchase commitment, and the market could become volatile if the deal stalls, which affects buyers' forward cover decisions.
