The Vietnamese dong has held steady against the US dollar, with the State Bank of Vietnam keeping its central rate at VNĐ23,160 per dollar and the interbank close at VNĐ23,173 in mid-December. The dong is also slightly stronger than at the end of 2018, unusual for the year's peak business season when it typically weakens.
A stable dong reduces the cost pressure on Vietnamese importers of feed inputs priced in dollars, such as soybean meal and corn. Surplus foreign-exchange inflows are the driver, so the effect on feed costs is modest.
