University of Georgia dairy scientist John Bernard found that cotton cake, a cottonseed meal product, can replace some soybean meal in dairy cattle rations. A feeding trial showed lactating cows produced comparable milk volume and composition.
Bernard noted that reducing the product's oil content would improve it further.
If adopted, cotton cake could offer dairy feeders a lower-cost protein alternative to soybean meal, with only a marginal effect on soymeal demand.
