A University of Illinois swine nutritionist said that changes in ethanol processing have altered DDGS composition, with less overheating leaving more amino acids intact but fat content cut to 5-8%. He said nutritionists can reduce soybean meal in swine diets because DDGS now has higher protein.
He also noted that excess leucine can reduce feed intake if not accounted for.
If pig producers substitute more DDGS for soybean meal, demand for soymeal in swine rations could soften while DDGS demand rises. The effect on prices is limited because the change is gradual and depends on formulation.
