New Zealand meat company Anzco has commercialised 26 new products from beef carcass by-products, including pericardium for heart valves and blood for vaccine serum. It has identified more than 30 others under consideration, and some bones once destined for meat and bone meal now go to healthcare markets.
Diverting bones and blood into higher-value healthcare uses reduces the volume available for rendering into feed meal, though the effect on prices is marginal.
