Highly pathogenic avian influenza has been confirmed in several more European countries, including the Czech Republic and Ukraine, bringing the count of European states reporting poultry outbreaks this winter to seven. The UAE banned imports of birds and some egg and meat products from Hungary and Slovakia, and French producers have called for poultry movements from infected countries to be halted.
Export bans and calls for trade restrictions could cut EU poultry meat and egg shipments, which totalled 1.58 million tonnes in 2018, leaving more product in the EU market and pressuring European poultry prices lower while importers shift to Brazil and the US.
