A breakaway of about 40 barges near Barton Street in St. Louis on February 12 closed the Upper Mississippi River for most of a day. The river reopened after the loose barges were secured, with no spills, injuries or sinkings reported.
The cause is under investigation.
Brief closures at St. Louis, a key grain barge hub, can delay shipments and tighten barge availability, modestly supporting barge freight rates.
