Greek rice growers say the EU-Mercosur trade pact will allow 60,000 tons of duty-free rice from Brazil, Argentina and other South American members. Growers already face cheap Asian imports, and local prices have halved to 25 cents per kilo.
The deal was approved by EU states and was due to be signed.
Duty-free South American rice entering the EU adds supply to a market already under price pressure. The effect on world rice prices is modest because the volume is small.
