Highly pathogenic H5N8 avian influenza was reported on a turkey farm in Lower Saxony, Germany, and in a backyard flock and wild bird in Saxony. A duck farm in Hungary is also infected, with about 32,000 birds scheduled for culling.
The virus was also detected in Poland and South Africa, and mild forms were confirmed on five more US turkey farms.
Multiple new outbreaks in European and US poultry reduce bird numbers and could modestly lower poultry feed demand in affected areas.
