University of Saskatchewan and Prairie Swine Centre research, funded by Swine Innovation Porc, is testing higher levels of supplemental methionine, threonine and tryptophan in weaned pig diets. Early results suggest current amino acid recommendations need raising when pigs face enteric pathogens.
The research could increase demand for synthetic amino acids such as methionine and lysine, and it may reduce reliance on in-feed antibiotics. The effect on feed commodity prices is small at this stage.
