Embrapa research found that higher phosphorus and zinc fertilizer doses raised cowpea grain protein by 8.3% and boosted yields to a maximum of 1.8 tons per hectare under rainfed conditions. Fertilized crops also produced a net return about three times greater than unfertilized ones.
The study was conducted in Brazil's Mid-North region.
