Northern US barley prices have diverged during the COVID-19 emergency. Feed barley in Montana has held near $2.75 per bushel after a 2019 harvest drop of about 20%, while malt barley has fallen about 13% since late February.
The decline is attributed to lower demand from closed bars and restaurants and weaker consumer spending.
Weaker malt demand from the hospitality sector is pulling malt barley prices lower, while feed barley is steadier, so the premium for malting quality is shrinking.
