The spread between hard red spring and hard red winter wheat has narrowed since September, falling to $0.46 per bushel in cash markets as of April 15, the weakest since December 2018. Futures also declined, and the HRW chart held above its April low while HRS neared its March low of $5.03.
A narrower spread signals weaker demand for higher-protein spring wheat relative to winter wheat. Buyers of protein-based feed may find HRS less premium against HRW.
