USDA's APHIS told the OIE on April 24 that the H7N3 avian flu in US turkey outbreaks in North and South Carolina stemmed from a single introduction with local spread, and one South Carolina farm saw a low-path virus mutate to highly pathogenic. Sequencing linked the virus to wild bird H7 strains, distinct from Mexican and Chinese H7 viruses.
The same briefing also reports a Mexican measles count.
Highly pathogenic avian flu in US turkeys can reduce poultry supply and raise demand for substitute proteins, with modest support for feed demand; the outbreak remains limited in scale.
