Sri Lanka will start producing single super phosphate from Eppawala phosphate deposits instead of importing or using rock phosphate, saving an estimated Rs. 4 billion a year.
Cabinet spokesman Ramesh Pathirana said the government has also imported fertilizer stocks for paddy and other crops. He cited a fertilizer shortage caused by a threefold rise in demand and an earlier import delay.
Domestic production reduces Sri Lanka's reliance on imported phosphate fertilizer, which is mildly bearish for TSP demand from that market. Demand is rising fast, so the import effect on global prices is likely to be limited.
