The rupiah weakened slightly to 14,725 per dollar in Jakarta interbank trade as tensions between the US and China increased. China's National People's Congress approved a new national security law for Hong Kong on May 28.
Analysts said the dollar was also under pressure from the same tensions, which could limit the rupiah's losses.
Heightened US-China tensions can weigh on trade sentiment and Chinese purchases of US farm goods, which matters for feed demand. The currency move itself is minor and has little direct price impact.
