The USDA began accepting applications on May 26, 2020 for the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program, which offers relief to farmers and ranchers facing a 5% or greater price decline or pandemic supply chain losses. Eligible commodities include non-specialty crops, wool, livestock, dairy and some specialty crops.
Applications close August 28, and public comments on the rule are accepted until June 22.
Direct payments can keep livestock and crop production going despite low prices, which supports feed demand over the coming months. The program does not directly change supply or demand balances.
