Kansas State University researchers reported that feeding reduced amino acid levels slowed finishing pig growth by about 14 pounds over a 44-day period. The study targeted the last 70 to 80 pounds of 200-pound pigs and gained three and a half to four weeks of marketing flexibility.
The team said the approach could help during any market disruption, including the pandemic.
Reduced amino acid feeding lowers lysine usage per pig, which is a mild negative for lysine demand. It also gives producers a way to manage hog marketing timing during packing slowdowns, easing near-term hog supply pressure.
