Kansas State University researchers found that reducing dietary amino acids, including lysine, slowed growth in 200-pound finishing pigs. The approach bought three and a half to four weeks of extra time while packing plants were backed up during the COVID-19 slowdown.
The researchers said the strategy could help whenever markets are disrupted.
Lower amino acid inclusion trims lysine demand per pig, which is mildly bearish for lysine. The study also shows producers can hold hogs longer during packer backlogs, which eases near-term supply pressure on lean hog prices.
