Joint BioEnergy Institute researchers published findings in Nature Communications identifying the final missing enzymatic step in plant lysine catabolism. The enzyme, hydroxyglutarate synthase, was characterized with structural biology work at the Advanced Light Source.
The team says the discovery will help future efforts to engineer lysine breakdown in crops.
The work is basic plant biochemistry with no near-term supply change for feed lysine. It could eventually inform breeding for higher-lysine cereals, a long-run factor for lysine supply, but it has no immediate price effect.
