Cargill, BioMar, Skretting and Mowi have jointly urged European coastal states to set blue whiting quotas within scientific recommendations. The companies say no mechanism exists to reopen talks before quotas are decided again at the end of 2021.
The statement follows the European Commission's Green Deal and Farm to Fork Strategy.
Blue whiting is an input for fishmeal, so pressure to keep quotas at or below scientific advice could support future marine ingredient prices. The effect on current prices is small because the decision is not due until late 2021.
