New data from VesselsValue and Alphaliner show 2020 newbuilding orders for tankers, bulkers and container ships are at historic lows. The container-ship orderbook has fallen to 9.4% of the fleet, and only 88 bulkers have been ordered year-to-date, 31% below last year's pace.
A thin newbuilding pipeline means fewer vessels will be available in 2021 and beyond, which supports higher freight rates over the medium term and higher shipping costs for feed ingredients.
