The US Army Corps of Engineers has resumed repairs on five of the eight locks and dams along the Illinois River, beginning in early July. Work is scheduled to finish by the end of October, ahead of the main harvest.
Repairs cover LaGrange, Peoria, Starved Rock, Marseilles and Dresden Island facilities.
Lock and dam maintenance reduces the risk of barge delays on a key downbound grain and soybean route before harvest peak. Expected reliability gains could support Illinois River barge capacity and limit freight cost spikes.
