North American hog farmers face prolonged financial pain as a US pig glut keeps prices low and pressures producers to downsize. Canadian piglet prices fell to $2.50 to $20 per head in the week ended 22 August, far below roughly $40 production cost, and the Canadian Pork Council has requested government aid.
Oversupply and sub-cost prices point to reduced hog herd size ahead, which would eventually lower feed demand from the hog sector. Near-term pressure on producers limits feed buying.
