Dry bulk shipping has had a very weak 2020, with the Baltic Dry Index staying below 1,000 all year and dipping under 400 in May, close to its 2016 all-time low. Smaller bulk carrier rates used by grain shippers, such as supramax and handysize, have remained depressed.
Low freight rates lower the cost of moving grain by sea, which can narrow origin-destination spreads and shift export competitiveness, though the sector's weakness reflects shipowner losses more than a direct supply shock.
