Indonesia's farming ministry has ordered breeders to cull millions of chickens and reduce hatching egg numbers to counter a slump in poultry prices. Live bird prices this year have fallen below the government's benchmark floor price and below feed costs, according to an independent farmers group.
Removing birds and hatching eggs cuts future chicken supply, which should firm domestic live bird prices. Feed-cost pressure on farmers is a key reason for the intervention.
